Udyam registration is the government’s official recognition of a business as a micro, small or medium enterprise (MSME). It costs nothing, needs no documents to be uploaded and can be completed online in one sitting — yet many small businesses in Gorakhpur still don’t have it, and miss out on cheaper loans, faster payments and scheme benefits.
What is Udyam registration?
Udyam replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar registration in July 2020. It is done on the government’s Udyam Registration portal, and the enterprise receives a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate.
Registration on the official portal is free. Be careful of look-alike websites that charge a fee for “Udyam registration” and collect your Aadhaar details.
Who qualifies
An enterprise is classified by its investment in plant, machinery or equipment and its annual turnover. It must meet both limits for a category. The limits in force from 1 April 2025 are:
| Category | Investment up to | Turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
Manufacturers and service providers can register, and so can retail and wholesale traders — although traders get the benefit mainly for priority-sector bank lending.
What the certificate unlocks
Easier, cheaper credit
Loans to MSMEs count as priority-sector lending for banks, and collateral-free loans are available under the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE). Many banks also offer MSMEs concessional rates and dedicated loan products.
Protection against late payments
Buyers must pay a registered micro or small supplier within the agreed period, and never later than 45 days. If they don’t, they owe compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate, and you can file a case on the government’s MSME Samadhaan portal. Income-tax law adds pressure too: a buyer can’t claim the expense until the payment is actually made.
Government tenders
Micro and small enterprises are usually exempt from paying earnest money deposits in government tenders, and central government buyers must source a share of their purchases from them, much of it through the GeM portal.
Other concessions
- A lower official fee for trademark registration.
- Eligibility for central and state subsidy schemes, including capital, interest and technology upgrade support.
- Recognition that helps with electricity connections, licences and certifications in many states.
How to register
- Keep the Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner or director, and the business PAN.
- Enter the business details — name, type of organisation, address, bank account, main activity and number of employees.
- Investment and turnover are pulled automatically from your income-tax and GST records, which is why PAN (and GSTIN, where you have one) matters.
- Submit with the Aadhaar OTP and download your certificate.
Your classification is updated automatically from your ITR and GST data each year, so there is no renewal to worry about — just keep those returns accurate. If you’d like help registering or choosing the right schemes for your business, talk to our business consultancy team.
